Behind the Lens

Hi, I’m Abigail Carleen, a photographer with a deep love for the ocean and a lifelong fascination with whales. Growing up in Oregon, I developed a connection to the natural world that led me to explore the waters of the globe. Since 2015, I’ve worked seasonally around the world, experiencing different whale populations in their natural habitats. From orcas in Washington State to humpback whales in Hawaii, Tonga, and French Polynesia, and most notably, studying the solitary beluga whale named Hvaldimir in Norway, my work has allowed me to contribute to scientific research while developing a unique perspective on these incredible creatures.

I’ve lived on boats, in vans, and immersed myself in the oceans I love, all while capturing the beauty of the world above and below the water’s surface. Now, based on St. Thomas in the USVI, I specialize in adventure photoshoots that celebrate the natural world.

My dream is to assist other solitary sociable cetaceans, like Hvaldimir, and one day start my own whale-watching business. Every photo I take is driven by my passion for the sea, my desire to share the stories of these incredible creatures, and my commitment to preserving their habitats for generations to come.
